GUJARATI FOLK MUSIC TURNS HIPFolk music, primarily considered the music of people was traditionally performed at festivals and is free from artificiality; is transparent, simple and direct in its tone. Over the years, folk music began to slowly detach itself from the oral culture and permeated our cultural lives in subtly invasive ways. Today folk no longer refers solely to melodies attached to the ancient stories of the land, techniques of singing, or to music belonging to rural communities. While folk continues to include these preserved traditions, it is also applied to contemporary music, enabling composers to re-invent it as ‘acid folk’, ‘folktronica’ etc.

Reloading old folk classics with new sounds is a trend that’s now flourishing in the Gujarati music industry —with jazz, rock or unplugged versions, in popular musical platforms thanks to new age musicians. Most Gujarati musicians feel recreating these songs is one of the smartest ways to take folk music to a wider audience. With the young, tech savvy audience having access to global music and an over-powering presence of Bollywood songs, local folk music tends to pale in the background. Making folk an integral part of popular musical vocabulary has become the sole purpose of some Gujarati musicians through rock, reggae or jazz tweaks.
Jainam Modi of Gujarati fusion band Meghdhanush, says, “We’re working on recreating classic folk songs. Our purpose is to take those beautiful songs to today’s audience by giving it the feel of today’s music.” He adds, “Today, a rock version/ unplugged version of a song finds a larger audience than the original folk.”. Folk songs have a universal appeal and their significance in any musical culture is hard to ignore. For this very reason, folk music has found a new sound in the parallel music scene in India and a number of leading musicians have collaborated with folk artists or given folk music a contemporary twist. Musicians like, Radhu Dixit, Clinton Cerejo and indie bands India have taken rustic Indian music to a whole new level.

Through television music shows, music videos and live performances, various artists have tried to reinvent folk music. Singer, who recently recreated a slow version of popular old Gujarati song, says, “The beautiful melody and simple, effective lyrics make these songs timeless. That’s the magic of these folk songs that work when they are recreated and presented in a new way. In fact, cover versions take the song to a wider audience.” She adds, “As artists, such efforts also help us widen our repertoire of work, which is important to stay connected to our fans.”While evergreen folk songs enjoy their share of loyal audience, these heartening efforts by today’s musicians also ensures that they remain relevant for young listeners.
